Top 5 To Do & See in Riviera Maya

Posted by Nicola Mina on Apr 20 2013

Riviera Maya beaches

The Riviera Maya is one of the most enchanting places on Earth. It stretches along the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula offering some of the best beaches with sand so fine it feels like flour between your toes.
The Caribbean sunrises are picturesque and provide breathtaking experiences for all.

Due to the diverse range of activities, all of the interesting places to go and millions of things to see, every vacation is an unique experience. From the ruins at Tulum to diving on the Great Maya Reef, there is truly something for everyone to enjoy; adventure-seekers and Golfer's alike!

Here is a list of the top 5 places to see and things to do in the Riviera Maya (in no particular order, they are ALL amazing):

1. Ruins of Tulum

Tulum ruins

The city of Tulum is the only known archaeological site located by the sea.
Tulum acted as a major port for Cobá, a large Mayan city.

There are over 60 well preserved structures can be found here including the Temple of Frescoes, a small shrine that marks a break in the barrier reef and the Castillo. This truly is a remarkable site saturated with history. A can't miss!

2. Golf

Golf in the Riviera Maya

Riviera Maya is home to many championship-style golf courses. Puerto Aventuras is definitely a step above the rest with its 36 hole golf course.

This unique course was designed by Thomas Lehman.
Surrounded by lush tropical foliage and encounters with iguana, deer and a variety of tropical birds, this is truly a jungle gold course. Enjoy!

3. The Jungle Maya Expedition

Jungle Maya Expedition

Get ready for a real adventure!
The Jungle Maya Expedition from Alltournative starts with a ride in an all-terrain vehicle that takes you to the Nohoch Nah Chich Cenote system.

Here you will be snorkeling into deep caverns exploring stalagmite and stalactite formations. After some snorkeling, you hop back into the Unimog (4X4) and cross the jungle where you will see a variety of flora, fauna and animal prints! The journey takes you to Yax-muul, the most amazing natural swimming pool in the Mexican Caribbean for some more snorkeling. A traditional Maya lunch awaits you on your return to the Rancho San Felipe.

4. Swim With The Dolphins

Delphinus Riviera Maya, in Playa del Carmen

Delphinus Riviera Maya is the best area to swim with dolphins. Located just 10 minutes south of the Playa del Carmen, makes this a very convenient location for most travelers.

The Dolphinarium is sheltered by an extraordinary natural formation that covers Ana Claudia With Dolphin an area of 108,000 ft. Delphinus Riviera has multiple programs including Primax Swim - Swim with dolphins and spend time with them in the water, Dolphin Ride - Dolphin ride and interaction activities, The One - Spend one on one time with the dolphin and trainer for one hour and Dolphin Trainer for a Day - 8 hours of spending time with a trainer learning about dolphin care, training, scientific research, veterinary program and breeding program.

5. Yaxché

Yaxché Restaurant in Playa del Carmen

Experience Maya cuisine at Yaxché. The dishes are mainly vegetable and seafood based. Shrimp Tacos are one of the most recommended appetizers and for a reason, they are delicious!

Some other culinary delights include Xtoloc - A cheese filled crepe sprinkled with paprika and Kinitch Chicken - Tasty, marinated and grilled chicken. Yummy!

This is by no means a complete list of things to do and see in the Riviera Maya. They are but a few of the coolest things we've found while vacationing and recommendations from friends, family and clients.
