Sea turtle nesting season in the Riviera Maya happens between the months of June and November. The local government and local non profit organizations take initiatives to protect the turtles and their nests in the Riviera Maya coasts.

Local police force guards the beaches day and night to protect them and along with several organizations encourage people to volunteer preventing poaching and the stealing of eggs for human consumption.

There are seven species of sea turtles in the world, six if them come to the beaches of Mexico for their nesting season. You might see female Green, Loggerhead, Hawksbill and the occasional leatherback turtle.

One single female turtle can lay up to 200 eggs at once. The eggs are laid safely on the sand inside a huge hole that turtles carve with their own fins, few meters away from the shore. Their eggs hatch 45 to 60 days later and the baby turtles come out of their shells and begin their amazing and dangerous journey towards the white crushing waves.

One amazing fact is that the grown female turtles always return to the same exact spot where they were born to lay their own eggs.

Here is all you need to know if you are vacationing during the turtle nesting season in the Riviera Maya and are lucky enough to encounter one:

  • Do not attempt to touch the sea turtle or crowd her, watch from a 30 feet distance.
  • Do not disturb the turtles, they are doing an amazing effort to lay their eggs.
  • Remain quiet and keep still, any noise can scare the turtle and she may abort

the mission and drop all of her eggs in the sea, with no chance for their survival.

  • Do not shine any lights towards the turtles or baby turtles.
  • Don’t use flash photography on nesting sea turtles or baby turtles.
  • No smoking around them.
  • Keep the beaches and sea clean. No straws, plastic bags, beer cans or any other garbage floating in the ocean: these are all lethal to sea turtles and other marine life.
  • While snorkeling or diving watch sea turtles from a distance, do not swim towards them and do not touch them. Their bite is harmful.
  • Instead of using sunscreen, wear a t-shirt in order to not pollute the water and harm marine life.

Stay on the safe side, the sea turtle is protected by Mexican law and it is illegal to disturb them, persecute or hunt them and consume their meat or eggs.

The Beach Tulum has a very wide stretch of beach, and sea turtles have been laying their eggs on their beach for many years. Up to now, July 2019 they have had 25 nests, with 3 of them already hatched. If you are lucky to stay there while baby turtles are born, please follow their front desk team’s directions: you will be told to turn off all lights and keep quiet, as babies are guided to the ocean by moonlight and any other source of light will not let them survive.

So if your trip coincides with the turtle nesting season in the Riviera Maya, you have read all you need to know and can just enjoy this miracle of nature!

Sargassum is a type of marine macroalgae that can grow several meters long, and provides an environment conducive to some marine organisms. It floats on huge mats in the ocean and does not have a specific trajectory indicating which beach or country it will arrive to, since it all depends on wind conditions and tides. It is said that sargassum comes from the coasts of the Atlantic Ocean, between the east coast of Florida and Bermuda and affects the whole Caribbean.

In the last year, sargassum has been known to hit the coasts of the Riviera Maya, especially during the summer months. If your vacation coincides with the arrival of sargassum in Tulum, yes it will at times prevent you from enjoying the pristine turquoise waters and clean white sandy  beaches, but it will give you an opportunity to discover other fun and unique activities that Tulum has to offer.

So if you are wondering what to do when sargassum hits Tulum, here are a few ideas for you:

  1. Archaeological Sites: You can discover these Maya sacred cities, temples and ancient commercial routes, learn about their culture and be amazed by their profound knowledge in astronomy and mathematics while witnessing some of their ancient rituals that persist until these days. The most popular archaeological sites are Tulum, Cobá, Muyil and the legendary Chichen Itzá which is located in the neighbor state of Yucatan.
  1. Cenotes: These are Maya sinkholes enclaved in the jungle, where you can discover distinct flora and fauna such as iguanas and tiny blind fish that have adapted to this peculiar ecosystem. Most of the cenotes are located inside huge caverns decorated with an infinite number of stalactites and stalagmites formed millions of years ago. The water is usually cold and always pristine, as it comes from rainwater filtering slowly through the limestone surface. You can practice regular snorkeling or cave diving if you have the proper certification, or simply swim in fresh water in open air cenotes. Most of the cenotes are privately owned and require an entrance fee, which can include snorkeling gear.
  1. Spa and Wellness: Tulum has a wide range of Spas, almost every hotel has their own and they offer exotic and traditional therapies. Yoga lessons, Reiki sessions, body treatments or meditation classes, Tulum is the place to be at if you enjoy these relaxing activities. Some places offer an experience in a Temazcal, the Maya sweat lodge. It involves “copal” incense accompanied by chantings and Maya rituals from a “Xaman”, providing a true cleansing of the body and mind. It is an intense purification experience which gives you a unique opportunity to connect with yourself. Check out The Beach Tulum’s Naj Naay Spa menus
  1. Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve: South of Tulum lies the magnificent Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve. With 780,000 acres of mangroves it provides a habitat for a remarkably rich flora and a fauna. It has lush jungle, beaches, lagoons, canals, archaeological sites and a coral reef barrier. The diversity of life in Sian Ka’an is exceptional, it’s home for deer, turtles, iguanas, crocodiles, spider monkeys and over 300 bird species, as well as fantastic mammals such as Jaguar, Puma, Ocelot and Central American Tapir. Tulum provides plenty of opportunity to immerse yourself in the wilderness while being in constant contact with nature, without touching the beach.
  1. Activities: there are so many activities to do in and around Tulum that a one month stay wouldn’t be enough! You can snorkel on the reef, swim with turtles in Akumal bay, zipline in the jungle or, if you are scared of heights, explore the jungle on ATVs. Take a tour in Sian Ka’an for bird watching, or paddle board your way on Kaan Luum Lagoon. If you feel like a bit of activity with beautiful views, check out one of the many Golf Courses of the Riviera Maya, like the oceanside El Camaleon golf course, created by legendary Greg Norman with a stunning location in the jungle, mangroves and by the beach.

At night, if you are staying at The Beach Tulum, ask them to organize one of their signature poolside dinners – 6 course dinner menu paired with selected Mexican wines. During two and a half hours you’ll have the chance to live the Mexican culinary experience.

Tulum is a destination where culture plays a main role.

If you are interested in history, ancient civilizations, amazing archaeological sites and are also longing to enjoy a relaxing time among nature, you must choose your vacation in Tulum as a cultural getaway.

The Maya culture is alive. Hundreds of Maya communities are immersed in the jungle and have their own sustainable economies. Most of the hotel’s employees are Maya and they speak their own language.

The Maya are proud people, they practice their traditions and replicate ancient recipes and rituals that are also available for you to enjoy. Their culture is characterized by monumental architecture, complex astronomical and mathematical systems, hieroglyphic writing and iconography, as well excellency in observation astronomy that guided their sustainable agricultural system and calendar.

The most impressive Maya archeological site is “Tulum” which was built on a cliff situated directly in front of the sea and facing the rising sun. An unbelievable scenario for breathtaking pictures, where you can imagine how ordinary life might have been when the Maya culture was booming around the 6th century A. D. This is the only Maya archaeological site built on the ocean.

Just north of the city of Tulum is the tallest archaeological site, named Cobá, where you can climb the 120 step temple which was the center of the civilization.

The Muyil archaeological site is located approximately 9.3 miles south of Tulum. Muyil is part of the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve, with impressive structures and an amazing mangrove canal system that will lead you through one of the many ancient commercial paths.

The Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve starts where Tulum ends. It has dunes, lagoons, savannahs, beaches, and protected ecosystems where you can practice snorkeling, kayaking and bird watching, among other activities.

Sian Ka’an in the Mayan language, translates into “Where the sky is born”. No words can describe the beauty of this unique tropical ecosystem, you must experience it.

If you are looking for a contemporary twist on culture, you cannot miss IK LAB, Tulum’s top art gallery hosting artwork from artists from all over the world, directed by Peggy Guggenheim’s great-grandson in a magical treehouse setting.

These are only some of the reasons for choosing your vacation in Tulum as a cultural getaway.

Tulum is the hidden gem of the Riviera Maya. It’s a natural destination for eco-conscious travelers that enjoy history, culture and nature, all in the same location.

Tulum is trendy, low key, chic and eclectic. It offers a mixture of colors, cultures, flavors and nationalities, all coexisting in harmony under one concept: a Mexican eco-friendly destination placed between the tropical jungle and the Caribbean Sea.

On the southern area of Tulum, you can find the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve with 780,000 acres of mangroves, lush jungle, endemic flora and fauna, beaches, lagoons, canals, archaeological sites and a coral barrier. It’s home for endemic fauna such as deer, turtles, iguanas and over 300 bird species.

Tulum provides plenty of opportunity to immerse yourself in the wilderness while being in constant contact with nature.

The Yucatan peninsula has around 6,000 cenotes (from the Mayan word “ts’ono’ot) which are natural fresh water holes located in the tropical jungle, surrounded by marvelous limestone caverns decorated with millions of stalagmites and stalactites. You will be amazed my the transparency of the water, its contrasting fresh temperature and the incredible emerald greens and turquoise blues reflected on their surface. Snorkeling and cave diving (if certified) are absolutely worth doing. You will be able to discover distinct fauna and flora (such as tiny blind fish) that have learned to live and adapt in this ecosystem.

The local government of Tulum, has been developing and approving plans for long-term solutions, while several hotels are making their own efforts to protect the environment. The Beach Tulum has managed to ban the use of single-use plastic in all rooms and amenities and are making their own efforts to preserve the ecosystem, by practicing recycling methods and helping reduce pollution and preserve this unique and trendy Mexican destination. They offer guests the free use of bikes to move around Tulum, combining a healthy lifestyle to less pollution.

Make sure you use eco-friendly sun block while going to the beach, diving, snorkeling or visiting the cenotes and keep the beaches free of plastic and cigarette butts. Hundreds of sea turtles come to nest in Tulum,  it is important that the beaches and ocean remain clean in order to preserve this beautiful species.

The cleanest beaches are not the ones that are cleaned constantly, but those which are preserved and taken care of by conscious locals and travelers. Let’s keep Tulum beautiful and clean.

If you are considering having your destination wedding at the Riviera Maya, it’s because you have fallen in love with Mexico and its hospitality.

The Riviera Maya has the best beaches and attractions, impressive Mayan archaeological sites and natural wonders.

In order to choose any of the Riviera Maya’s best spots you have to take into consideration these 7 factors while researching for a location:

  • Proximity and access to the beach.
  • Plan B location (In case of rain).
  • Excellent cuisine.
  • Top notch facilities.
  • Lodging for your guests.
  • Best vendors.
  • Best wedding coordination services.

The Riviera Maya offers more locations than the famous and trendy Playa del Carmen or Tulum. There are other amazing cities and towns you can choose from to celebrate your perfect day, such as Puerto Aventuras, Akumal, Xpu-Ha, Paamul, Sian Ka’an and Cozumel.

First of all, you will have to define your budget. Having a destination wedding can lower your costs, since your guest list will be reduced to the people that really love you and will gladly take the time and go through the expense of traveling to another destination to celebrate your wedding. This will allow you to concentrate your budget spending in what is more important for you: live music, flowers and decor, food and drinks, etc.

Secondly, decide on the location. These are some of the best options for your wedding in the Riviera Maya:

  • Luxury rental homes. Having your wedding at a luxury private home will allow you to have an intimate ceremony, dinner and party. Most of these properties are located on the beach, offering full house staff and complete privacy. These are perfect for small, intimate weddings.
  • Small boutique hotels. These properties are usually elegant and quaint and offer you privacy as well as all the services you need, along with enough hotel rooms for about 30 to 50 guests. If you choose this option and your number of guests exceeds the hotel’s limit, you can always share with them a list of nearby hotels that are closest to yours, displaying their rates so everyone can choose according to their budget.
  • Each hotel has their own policies, they might ask you to rent out the entire property for the weekend. Make sure you are aware of their terms as well as the age limit for their guests, decibels allowed for loud music and their closing time. This is the best option for a medium size wedding. The Beach Tulum is a great choice as their sister hotel next door has an additional 24 rooms.
  • All Inclusive resorts. If you wish to have a large wedding this is a great option because you will have all of your guests staying in the same property. There is a wide range of hotels with different prices and categories, you can choose from 3 star hotels to 5 diamond properties. Privacy and exclusivity might be compromised, since most All Inclusive hotels have several weddings per day. They usually have their own wedding planners and selected vendors, if you wish to hire external vendors extra fees may be involved, make sure you read their contract thoroughly to avoid surprises. Fun activities can be planned for your guests within the same property during the entire weekend, as well as enjoying all the specialty restaurants and theme nights they have to offer.
  • Beach Clubs. The main advantage of hosting your wedding at a beach club is that your guests can decide where they want to book their stay depending on their needs and budget. The beach clubs usually book only one wedding per day, depending on your guest count the property might be exclusively for your event or shared with other clients. If you have less guests than the number they require for a private event, you could pay and extra fee and book the entire property. They usually give you flexibility to choose your own wedding planner and vendors.

The Riviera Maya has the best spots and beaches for your Mexican destination wedding.

Ox Bel Ha (Maya for Three Paths of Water) located just south of Tulum, Mexico, was discovered as the largest underwater cave on the planet in 2018.

Robert Schmittner, a German national living and loving Mexico since 1998, found in Tulum the perfect place to practice his real passion: underwater cave diving. Schmittner, the GAM (Great Maya Aquifer Project) Director of exploration, had been looking for this connection for 14 years while adding new mapped tunnels and galleries to this water labyrinth.

On January 10th 2018, Schmittner along with a team of professional divers, finally found the connection between two of the most extensive flooded cavern systems on Earth: Sac Aktún (Maya for White Cave System) and Dos Ojos (Spanish for Two Eyes), both located in Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula, forming the world’s largest known flooded cave, with a length of 215 miles, proving that the two systems were actually one, discovering a Monster cave, the Mother of all underwater systems in the world.

Guillermo de Anda, a National Geographic explorer and director of the GAM describes the great importance of this amazing discovery: “This immense cave represents the most important submerged archaeological site in the world, since it has more than a hundred archaeological contexts, among which is evidence of the first settlers of America, as well as the extinct fauna and, of course, of the Maya culture”.

This area was dominated by Maya civilization before the Spanish conquest in the 16th Century. More than a 100 archaeological elements have been discovered. Perfectly preserved human remains were found as well as extinct fauna such as elephants, bears, tigers, ancient horses and giant sloth bears. Other artifacts like ceramics, jade beads, shells, stone tools and even Maya graves were also discovered.

Both above the ground and underground, this area boasts an exciting collection of natural fauna and flora; ranging from 103 species of mammals, 550 species of birds, 182 species of reptiles and amphibians (of which 14% are endemic), 800 plant species, 112 species of orchids and 38 stygobitic species (underwater invertebrates) of which 36 are crustacean and two are fish.

According to the Quintana Roo Speleological Survey, only on the North of this State, there are 358 underwater caves, which represent a sweet underwater system of approximately 869 miles long.

GAM now intends to connect Sac Aktún with three other underwater cave systems that are all in close proximity to each other in the area, hoping that all these discoveries and effort, will be preserved, protected and valued.
